James Dean Recreation
To generations of followers, James Dean is a legend whose reputatuib rests today on the three
major films he completed before his death - "Rebel Without a Cause", "East of Eden" and "Gaint".
On 30th September 1955, Dean and mechanic Rolf Weutherich were travelling along highway
466 to compete in an amateur road race in Salinas. As they approached the small town of Cholame
at about 5:45pm a black and white Ford Sedan driven by a twenty three year old student, Donald Turnupseed,
was travelling in the opposite direction. The student drove across the junction with Highway 41,
blocking Jimmy's path. Jimmy saw the car too late to avoid collision and his Porsche 550
flew off the road hitting a telegraph pole, the impact breaking his neck. He died on route
to the War Memorial Hospital in Paso Robles. He was 24 years old.
